Judge's Critiques

Dogs: Kerry Jelfs

Firstly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the AMCUK for inviting me to judge this prestigious show & to all exhibitors for their entry.
On the whole I found bites, temperaments & coat texture to be good so I feel it unnecessary to comment on these points in each individual critique. Thank you to my co-judge on the day Kimberly Jebson, for making the final discussions for the top honours friendly & enabling us to decide in an amicable fashion between us both.

Being invited to judge the breed club open show gave me the honour & opportunity to judge a broad spectrum of our breed, some dogs that are worked more than shown & perhaps not seen in this capacity as often as some. On this point I have an observation I would like to share with regards to fitness of exhibits. Whilst in general the fitness levels were good, I found that the conditioning & muscle tone of some were lacking affecting pasterns & movement. Special attention in this area should be paid by those in particular who exhibit dogs with the fuller more glamorous coats - weight needs to be watched in these cases & conditioning overall will need extra attention. This point, was to me, important enough to mention & did affect some of my placings on the day.

MPD (4,1)
1st Cameron, Pennings & McGrae's Icewolf I'll Be Back.
6mths. Very substantial baby boy, superb head, correct dark well set eye, small ears placed nicely, good front & shoulder placement, rear angulation moderate, nice tail & carriage, excellent bone with neat feet, movement relaxed, really enjoying his day just as they should especially at this age, watch with interest for future.
2nd Taylor's Luponooshka Barbarian (AI). 8mths. Totally differing from one in all respects but still a well proportioned boy, attractive head, well set ear & eye, well angulated throughout, covered ground with ease on the move, tailset & carriage correct.
3rd Finan's Marahootay Quick As A Flash. 8mths. Slightly smaller in overall structure to first two placed but a well put together puppy with all in proportion to his size, head not as developed as others but there is plenty of time for this to broaden, eye & ear well set, preferred tailset & carriage on my first two.

PD (6,1)
1st Nawrocka & Phillips' Monikoona Most Wanted.
10mths. Smart lad with presentation in both handling & condition scoring well on the eye but also found to be sound in construction, good head, kind expression with small well placed ears, dark eye, good chest development for age, correct angles on front leading to sloping topline, moderately angled on rear with correct tailset & carriage, balanced profile, steady mover. BPD & BPIS

2nd Taylor's Luponooshka Barbarian (AI). As MPD
3rd Smith's Packice Asen. 11mths. Attractive head, masculine for age, broad skull, dark eye, well placed ears, chest needs time, good topline, tailset correct but heavily furred so carriage could appear not as good as others, scored for me greatly in athleticism, super fit & toned, body just needs to catch up with head for overall balance.

JD (4,1)
1st Dolan's Siskara The Spy Who Loved Me JW.
14mths. Boy who takes your eye for appeal, straight front, lovely kind expression, head still maturing affecting broadness of skull but this will come, dark almond shaped well placed eye, moderately angled throughout, correct feet, good tail & carriage, moved well in all directions, presented & handled well.
2nd Plant & Stanyer's Siskara For Your Eyes Only. 14mths. Litter brother to 1, slower to mature it seems with slighter stature & bone, head carries kind inviting expression, correctly placed ears & dark almond oblique eye positioned well in proportion to ears, moderate rear angles.
3rd Anderson's Tokosha Beyond The Limits To Cherubini (AI). 15mths. Substantial boy with very mature head, good dark eye & well placed ears, heavier set overall than others placed, ample bone, straight front, nice feet, coat full of good texture, unfortunately not as well developed in the rear as my 2nd place boy.

YD (3,0)
1st John's Cristakell Fidelius.
16mths. Liked this boy very much, super attractive head, very expressive with good almond dark eye well placed in relation to nicely set ears, straight front with correct chest development expected at this age, strong neck & well placed shoulder giving excellent topline, well proportioned throughout, correct tailset but huge amount of fur can appear to affect carriage, alert driving movement sealed class win.
2nd Atherton's Casiat Ombre Del Buio. 20mths. Good overall proportions in profile, well placed thick ears, broad skull, chest not quite as developed as 1, strong topline, moderately angled on rear, good coat texture, very well muscled throughout, easy mover.
3rd Windley & Taylor's Kaskae Lets Get It On. 19mths. Masculine tidy head piece, small thick well furred ears in proportion to dark eye, shorter coupled than others in class & combined with profuse harsh coat can appear unbalanced in profile, correct tailset, steady movement, not as conditioned as my 1 & 2.

PGD (16, 5)
1st Burgess's Jaydonspire True Heart.
2yrs. This boy was on his toes & ready for action at all times, really showing himself off, pleasing head, broad skull, lovely small ears, thick, placed well in relation to dark almond shaped eye, well developed in chest & well sprung rib, strong throughout body with correct angles, lovely feet, very good tail & carriage, presented well in all aspects, moved powerfully to clinch top spot in the largest class of the day & later my RBD.
2nd Corkhill's Justami Ohcumgache. 2yrs. Smaller overall than 1 but super overall balance, attractive head, sweet expression, good dark eye in line with the smallest thick well furred ears, well off for chest depth & moderately angled throughout, excellent tailset & carriage with desired waving plume, easy yet driving action in all directions stood out for me, extra conditioning to optimise muscle & strengthen pasterns would have pushed 1 harder.
3rd Thompson's Libertia In The Red Again At Shomont. 2yrs. Very happy alert boy, broad skull, almond oblique set eye, well developed chest, strong shoulders & topline, well off for bone, moderately angled at rear, clear to see this boy likes to move & he is good at I, free easy movement but can appear erractic at times throwing his rear action slightly.

LD (9,2)
1st Thompson's Shomont Rasin Hell.
3yrs. Excellent head ratio's, dark almond eye perfectly aligned with small thick well furred ears, skull broad, moderate stop, strong neck & shoulders leading to super sloping topline finished off with ideal tailset & carriage, angles moderate throughout. good chest depth & matured sprung rib, excellent driving action from super fit exhibit.
2nd Wolfe's Hawkeye Polarni Usvit Within Dreamwolves (Imp Cze). 3yrs. Mature head, well set eye & ears, good stop, strong & muscled throughout, good tailset & carriage, excellent rear angulations, topline carried well on the move which was excellent in profile just preferred rear extension & chest development of my first.
3rd Wilson's Chayo Dare To Be Different. 2years. Friendly expreesion on a head still yet to mature fully, dark eye, well placed, moderate stop, conditioned well throughout, with correct moderate angulation, good tailset & carriage, moved well in all directions, maturity in others placed higher sealed placing for this good youngster.

OD (10,2)
1st Thompson's Shomont Rasin Cain.
3yrs. Love this boys masculine yet friendliest of expressions, oblique almond dark eye perfected set with small excellent furred ears, very well developed chest, strong thick neck, excellent shoulder placement & strong sloping topline, well boned, great feet, moderately angled throughout, superb waving plume whilst moving which was very free & easy for this boy despite him being very substantial in body, great drive, effortlessly covering ground, dog from today I could have easily taken home. BD & BIS.
2nd Nevinson's Chayo Fortune Comes To Wintalakes ShCM. 4yrs. Masculine head, broad skull, well placed ears & eyes, very strong throughout neck & shoulders, well developed throughout body, super rear angles, good tail, moved very well with drive, just preferred overall balance of 1.
3rd Bebiano's I/MLT/LUX/BEL/NL Ch Equinox Woodvram Polarni Usvit JW ShCM TAN (Imp Cze). 5yrs. Very attractive head helped so by ear & eye placement, strong well placed shoulders, excellent topline, tailset & carriage, good bone & angles, moved well once he gave it his full attention, someone had their mischievous head on today.

SVD 7-9yrs (4,0)
1st Loades' Ch Snowolf Canuck Bullit ShCM.
9yrs. Nice head with good ear & eye ratio's, dark eye, moderate stop, strong neck & shoulders, great topline with excellent tailset, well off for bone, well angulated, by far the most free mover of this class in superb harsh condition. BVD.
2nd Edwards & Molloy's Snowshoes Shadow At Wintablizard. 8yrs. Super expression, great condition throughout, topline held well, good tailset & carriage, moderately angled, movement steady, shame pasterns & feet slightly loose affecting profile & movement.
3rd Singh's Mountain Home Sledog Pride (Imp). 8yrs. Broad skull, masculine head, good stop, dark eye, well bodied but conditioned, good tailset & topline firm, angles correct, extended well on the move, just preferred fronts on my first two.

Kerry Jelfs (Lapema)

Bitches: Kimberley Jebson

Firstly I would like to thank exhibitors for the lovely entry and the committee for the invitation to judge the breed show, a thoroughly enjoyable day.

As a breeder judge my overall impression was that our breed is in good shape at this time. Heads I feel have improved greatly over recent years with many more neat well furred ears. However I noticed an increase in squarely built dogs which lack good angulation, these dogs move with a more stilted vigorous gait, although still sound & well balanced watch how many strides they put in to cover the same ground as a correctly built reaching & driving Malamute who looks more steady & effortless, it would be a shame to lose this.

It was a pleasure to judge along side specialist Kerry Jelfs who I thank for our amicable discussions and agreements on the final placings. BIS went to the dog, Thompson's Shomont Rasin Cain, an impressive 3 ½ year old who oozes breed type. Plenty of substance without appearing coarse. Most appealing head with delightful expression, strength throughout with lovely neat ears and dark eye. Love his proportions and his excellent angles make him power round the ring most efficiently, waving that super plume! RBIS & BVIS went to the bitch, Atkinson's Cinneli Trek De Eleanor for Ekati (see VB class). BJIS also went to the bitch, Cameron, Pennings & McGrae's Chayo Eye Candy (see JB class). BPIS went to the dog, Nawrocka & Phillips' Monikoona Most Wanted. Stunning puppy. Super head, lovely ear size & set. Good strong bone & body makes for a very pleasing outline. Lovely and balanced on the move with super tail carriage. Gorgeous coat. His overall finish just gave him the edge over a super bitch puppy.

MPB (5)
1st Taylor's Luponooshka London Wasp (AI).
Very promising 8 month old. Delightful head & expression, dark eye & neat ears. Excellent shape to this pup with balanced angulation & enough bone. Excellent coat, good tail, lovely movement being very even and together for her age.
2nd Scott & Wheatley's Iyara Greyjoy of Greystone Shadow. Another who excelled in movement for one so young, I would prefer slightly more strength throughout but her construction is excellent as is her tail carriage. Feminine expression with super dark eye.
3rd Singh's Sledog Indian Monsoon (AI). Just 7 months and losing out today to 2 more 'together' pups. Good head with lovely dark eye. Love her shape & angulation, good tail & super bone. Everything is just a bit loose at the moment but shows plenty of promise.

PB (7,2a)
1st Robotham & Reader's Packice Orsa.
Super honest & truly delightful 11 month old. Wouldn't change a thing on her at this stage & for her age. Head coming on well, she is feminine but with a strength throughout that screams Malamute. Excellent strong front, best of forechest & super rear. Tail set & carried perfectly. When she gets into her stride her movement is exceptional. She should have a bright future. BPB, only lost to male by the splitting of hairs!
2nd Taylor's Luponooshka London Wasp (AI).
3rd Saye's Packice Mora. Litter sister to 1st & very similar in make & shape just looking very raw against 1 & 2 at the moment. Look forward to seeing her in the future.

JB (6,1a)
1st Cameron, Pennings & McGrae's Chayo Eye Candy.
Another with a bright future I'm sure. I love the balance & proportions of this bitch, very easy mover. Attractive girl with correct head, dark eye & good ear size. Super topline & lovely tail carriage. With the agreement of co-judge pleased to award her BJIS.
2nd Robotham & Reader's Packice Orsa.
3rd Edwards & Molloy's Koolrunnings Plymouth Gin (Imp Aus). Again balance and movement excellent on this bitch, she is stylish without losing the correct working gait. Best of heads, very feminine with lovely ear size. Excellent tail.

YB (4)
1st Jacklin's Ikiao Dreamer.
Placed 5th in previous class which shows the depth of quality there! Strong bitch with good bone, super chest, good depth. Strong topline into well angulated rear. Tail carried too tight spoiling her outline. Settled better with her handler in this class to out move the rest.
2nd Murray & Whyman's Tailfly Nikabokaglory. Attractive bitch who I liked the overall shape of, she has lovely angles, her head is coming along nicely, and she moved out well. Her topline now just needs to strengthen to complete the picture.
3rd Atkinson's Ekati Make A Move. I did like the outline of this girl very much, lovely angles. Prettiest of heads with super neat ears, eye could be slightly darker. Gave her plenty of opportunity to settle on the move as I saw a lot to like but still she played up!

PGB (9,1a)
1 Atherton's Casiat Dietro Casa. Squarer than I would like but very well balanced which showed on the move. Super head on this bitch. Strong topline, ample bone and lovely tail.
2 Butler's Kaytoo Antarctic Anko. Very feminine, preferred her overall proportions but giving a couple of years away in age on 1 so lacked the maturity and depth of body. Super coat condition & tail carriage completed a lovely picture.
3 Anderson's Cinneli Fast N Furious Phinx to Cherubini. Maturing well & I look forward to seeing her in a couple more years. Needed to get it together on the move today! She has a lovely outline, correct proportions, lovely topline and super angles.

LB (7,1a)
1 Anderson's Cherubini Midnight Wolf. Excellent bitch gained her top spot on the move for having the best shoulder angulation. Strong but feminine head, beautiful dark eye and good ears. Excellent proportions, correct well balanced angles, ample bone, and lovely tail. Super coat.
2 Roach & Piper's Celticice Denarius Xhanxi. Loved this bitch too for her super angles and balance, strong bone & topline, Good coat & tail. Effortless mover. Very close decision between 1 & 2.
3 Taylor's Hyteton Iggik for Luponooshka. Again placed for her quality construction. Typical head & expression, would prefer darker eye. Excellent on the move, now just needs to mature on.

OB (12,5a)
1 Taylor's Hyteton Relu Silver Moon for Luponooshka. Has matured so much since I judged her last, good sized bitch but now she has filled her frame she has the most beautiful outline, correct proportions, super well balanced angles with that all important forechest & excellent bone. In the best of coats, she has a typical head and lovely tail carriage. Effortless, efficient, ground covering movement. RBB.
2 Wilkinson's Koldsnap Aprilia Mille. Impressed with her foot perfect movement. She has the most appealing gentle expression. Very well balanced with lovely bone & substance whilst retaining her femininity. Correct sloping topline & lovely tail carriage to complete the picture.
3 Loades & Boyd's Hyteton Tebo Miss Magnum by Snowolf. This bitch is impressive on the move. Quality head with correct eye and lovely ear size & set. Super coat and condition. Nice angles & good tail, just preferred the fronts of previous.

SVB 7-9yrs (13,2a) The best class on the day for me, the depth of quality was outstanding, a class full of correctly proportioned dogs, matured to their best and moving as you would expect from such well constructed examples. I may have moved them more than necessary as they were a joy to watch! A real credit to owners and breeders.
1 Atkinson's Cinneli Trek De Eleanor for Ekati. For me this girl had everything. The best of heads with the most appealing expression, lovely dark eye & well sized neat ears. She is a strong bitch whilst retaining her femininity. Her front is exceptional with a good depth of chest, excellent shoulder placement, gently sloping topline into well angulated powerful rear. Her tail carriage is ideal, as is her outline. On the move she created the perfect picture of powerful yet effortless. BB, and pleased my co-judge agreed she deserved RBIS & BVIS.
2 Forster's Hawkam's Kruzin' On By to Kachemak. Love the substance of this girl, lovely bone and super outline. Excellent proportions & angles, another excellent strong topline & correct tail. Effortless movement, covers the ground well.
3 Rivers & Towers' Polarpaws Naknek Dreamer ShCM. Another delight to watch moving, giving the impression they could go all day. She presents an excellent picture standing, lovely balanced angles. Super coat & tail.

SVB 10+yrs (9) Delightful class, many belying of their age.
1 Loades' Ch Snowolf Manhatten Heatwave. Nobody told this girl she is 10! Outstanding on the move and this won her the class although a fraction shorter in body than I like she is extremely well balanced which shows in her movement. Nice typical head with neat ears, well held topline & good tail.
2 Smith's Hyteton Apollo Pheobe. Adored this bitch for breed type, perfect in profile stance, strong well boned, super proportions & angles, strong gently sloping topline & super tail. Breed typical head with the most appealing expression. Could have been challenging for top honours had she not been showing her age a little on the move but for 12 years old, wow!
3 Rivers & Towers' Polarpaws Naknek Coolit. Very feminine 11 year old of good proportions, nice angles and super tail carriage. Moved out well & clearly still loving showing herself off!

Kimberly Jebson (Austmans)

Special Rescue Stakes: Stacey Harris

Firstly I would like to thank the Alaskan Malamute Club of the UK for inviting me to judge the Special Rescue Stakes at their Open Show and for their hospitality. I was very honoured to judge the Special Rescue Stakes for them. A big thank you also to my entries on the day. The money raised all went to a very good cause. The main faults I found on the day were level bites and incorrect tail carriage.

Junior Dog/Bitch (7/1)
1. Dolan's Siskara the Spy Who Loved Me JW
15mth male stood out in the line with correct outline, typical head with well set ears, soft expression, deep chest with correct top line, powerful hindquarters, in good coat with full well furred tail, his drive won this boy a first place.
2. Singh's Sledog Indian Monsoon 7mth bitch good looking youngster who moved well round the ring, correct outline, with muscular neck, good coat, stood well for handler, promising future.
3. Darlow's Sledog Indian Ocean 7mth bitch quite similar to what I found with her sister placed 2nd, not quite so balanced yet.

Open Dog (8/2)
1. John's Shomont Rasin Suspicions Among Cristakell JW ShCM
3yr male had the chance to go over this boy as a 1yr old and he has not disappointed in age, stood out in the ring, he is maturing nicely with well arched neck, correct top line and good angulation which helped him power around the ring. A bit naughty on the day but Best Special Rescue Stakes winner overall.
2. Bebiano's l/Mlt/Lux/Bel/NL Ch Equinox Woodvram Polani Usvit JW ShCM 5yr male good broad skull and muzzle with well set furred ears, correct top line and depth of chest to good tuck up, moved around the ring well, presented well.
3. Blackburn's Chayo Icecold Apparition ShCM 2yrs male well proportioned with correct broad head and muzzle, great expression with well leathered ears, sound on movement and won overall due to drive. Very happy character who talked all the time, again another well presented dog.

Open Bitch (8/2)
1. Blackburn's Celticwolf Long Night ShCM
4yr bitch a well presented girl who I noticed as she entered the ring, endearing feminine expression within a broad head and muzzle, good outline, well balanced and well muscled, stunning tail and carriage, moved better than I have seen before and so won on drive today.
2. John's Chayo Rumour Has it for Cristakell 2yr bitch good outline and correct top line, feminine head, strong neck onto well placed shoulders, muscled hind quarters with well let down hocks, correct tail carriage.
3. Butler's Kaytoo Antarctic Anko 1yr bitch a taller bitch than the others but still in proportion, smaller head than no.2 which needs to mature, long arched neck, good tuck up and well plumed tail.

Stacey Harris (Snowtwinkle)
