For 40 years, Alaskan
Malamutes held rare breed status in the UK. In January 2006 due
to the gaining popularity of the breed, the
Kennel Club changed the status of the breed and for the first
time we were able to gain Challenge Certificates (CCs).
In the
Summer of 2006 the first UK Champion Alaskan Malamute was
confirmed by the Kennel Club and there are currently 4 UK
Champions. The popularity of the breed has also resulted in an
increase in group placing and Best in Show wins both at
Championship and Open levels.
The breed currently has
6 sets of Challenge Certificates and 2 single CC shows. In 2010,
this will be increased to 11 full sets of Challenge Certificates
and then in 2011 it will increase to 15 full sets.
